TEN O'CLOCK COOKIE

CAFÉ NAME: Ten O’clock Cookie Bakery Cafe

LOCATION: Masterton, Wairarapa

MANAGER / OWNER: Monique Kloeg

Sum up your café in 5 words….

On-trend; busy; friendly; professional; award-winning

What did you want to be as a kid?

Marine biologist.

What living person do you most admire, and why?

My brother Michael. He is passionate and gives 110% to everything he does. Committed family man, award-winning baker, keen rugby player and supporter, dedicated to his beliefs.

What is your favorite quote?

‘God gave you two hands, use them’ – John Kloeg (my Dad).

What do people say about our straws?

They are very happy we have changed to them.

What is your proudest moment?

Buying my first home.

What is your biggest work-related challenge?

Managing employees.

When are you happiest?

When I’m at CrossFit.

Why should other cafes / people make the swap to paper straws?

We are the generation to make the change. Our environment has been neglected, therefore it has become our responsibility to care for it. I was skeptical about making the change to paper straws, as all previous experiences with them turned into a soggy mess but The Rubbish Whisperer paper straws are a grade above all. I left a straw in my glass of kombucha for over 2 hours, and it still held its form! Paper straws cost a bit more then plastic, we just added it into our costings.

TEN O'CLOCK COOKIE

How do you relax?

On a Shakti mat.

What keeps you awake at night?

Nothing; after a day’s work at the café, I’m so exhausted I fall straight asleep!

What impact has swapping the straws made on your business?

People appreciate we are making the effort to be environmentally sustainable. It also keeps us accountable for other packaging we use. We recycle everything, use only biodegradable plastic and have reusable coffee keep cups.
